Summer Newsletter, 2012

 
 
There is one thing about hiking in Canada you never have a chance to get bored with the weather and weather is one of the challenges associated with hiking. Throughout the year we transition from the balmy, fragrant days of autumn to the bitterly cold and frigid winter hikes then the damp warming days of spring and into the hot and humid period of summer and that is where we are now. Everyone has there favorite season and each offers its specific challenge and dangers, summer perhaps the worse. Always be on the look out for hyperthermia, don't over extend yourself and drink plenty of water. But most of all enjoy the warm days, soon enough we will be back in cleats and heavy scarves.
 
There have been a number of changes in the Board of Directors of the Ramblers Association that I would like to report;
 
After being deeply involved for 3 years Rosalie Shewchuk has stepped down and will be greatly missed. She served in many roles but primarily as Club Secretary and also as Registrar and on behalf of the whole Association I would like to thank her for her hard work, commitment and dedication. I hope we continue to see you on the trails Rosalie.
 
After my last appeal for volunteers 2 people came forward and have been added to the Board: Caroline O'Connor who has assumed the role of Club Secretary and Paul Michetti who was appointed Membership Chairman. I welcome both Caroline and Paul and look forward to working with them as we grow the Ramblers Association. As the club has grown attendance at our bi-weekly hikes continues to increase, we now average over 30 walkers and the role of Registrar has become too demanding for one person. Paul has established a committee of volunteers who will share the responsibility of verifying membership and collecting fees at our events. Please help these people by wearing your membership card in a prominent place so it can be easily seen. This is also a requirement of our liability insurers and clearly identifies us to landowners and others as a responsible and organized group.
 
Paul will also be making other changes to the membership fee structure. At the present time the membership year runs from October 1st to September 30th and a discount was offered for people joining after May1st. From now on membership will run for one year from the date you join and there will be only one fee: $45:00 for family membership and $25:00 for an individual. Members will be reminded by email when their fees are due. Please follow the instruction, provide the information requested, send your cheque and you new membership card will be sent by mail.
 
We continue to work with the administrations of the Towns of Hudson and St Lazare to bring about improvements in their respective walking and hiking trail networks and I believe we are making some, though slow progress. To show our support we will have a booth at the Hudson Street Fair on Saturday August 4, 2012. If there are enough volunteers we will also offer short guided walking tours of Hudson. While, as I mentioned several people have come forward to help with the administration of the Ramblers Association but we need more, please let me know if you can help in any way
