Join us for a snowshoe hike in the woods of the Morgan Arboretum, a 245-hectare forested reserve, situated on the McGill University Macdonald Campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue on the western tip of the island of Montreal.Because the weather has been so unusual, bring your snowshoes and crampons for your hiking boots – we will decide on the day, which we will use.

If you want to have a bit more fun (and make others in the park wonder what is going on) wear something redpink, white or frilly in honour of Valentine’s day.

P.S. You may want to bring along a handful of sunflower seeds for the chickadees who may be coaxed to eat out of your hand.

REPORT:

2016-02-14  Silly Frilly Valentine hike in the Arboretum _ Report

Date of hike: Sunday, February 14, 2016

Name of Trail (if applicable): Part of the Green, most of the Yellow and ending with a section of the Orange walking trails within the Morgan Arboretum.

Leader(s) for the hike and # of hikers: Leaders - Alan and Barbara Gibb with 7 members who were tough enough to brave the coldest hiking day of the year

Distance/approx. time: 6.1 km in 1 hrs 21 minutes which we did in boots rather than snowshoes in order to keep up a faster pace.

Brief description of trail (terrain/degree of difficulty): It is an easy, flat trail which was within the woods as much as possible to keep us out of the wind. The sunshine tricked us into believing it was not as cold as it was with the temperature hovering around – 26C and -38 with the wind chill factor.

Points of Interest/landmarks. We met in the pavilion because of the sub zero temperatures and wind. Hikers got into the spirit of Valentine’s by wearing something red or pink or with hearts. Edith carried a glittering heart on a stick and heart stickers were distributed for attachment to Ramblers hiking badges so we could all “follow our hearts.”  At one point along the trail, we marched in a giant heart pattern in the snow (see photo). Everyone was rewarded with a chocolate heart at the end of the hike (again within the pavilion)

Seasonal availability: 4 season.

Access Point (noting facilities if available): Access from 2nd parking lot. Facilities in the pavilion.
