Estimated time: 2 h

This hike will take us through a mixed forest of spruce, balsam fir, hemlock, pine, beech, and maple trees – and in this one – a special treat of a living Christmas tree – all decked out in its festive finery!  We have the advantage of observing the beauty of patterns in the bark of trees in winter.  If you stop and listen, you may hear the chickadees and see &/or hear pileated woodpeckers or wild turkeys.  If you are lucky (and quiet), you may also see the maker of the many deer tracks that can be found in the area.

Please note that we have received permission from the landowners whose land we will cross.

Alan and Barb Gibb will lead this hike which will take about 2 hours. Bring your snowshoes and, depending on the weather conditions, footwear could even be hiking boots and crampons. Trekking poles would be advantageous.  Dress for the weather, in layers, and bring water.

Rendezvous  specifically around 72 Leger, Hudson  by 9am for a 9:10am departure.  Directions Coming from E ( from Bellevue,) turn left off Main (at corner with Three Spruce Antiques )

Directions from W ( Cameron), turn R off Main onto Royal Oak (you will see the sign for the Royal Oak Tennis Club) and follow the street veering left,  around to Leger.

REPORT:

Date of hike: Sunday, January 31, 2016

Name of Trail (if applicable): on mostly private land in Hudson

Leader(s) for the hike and # of hikers: Leaders - Alan and Barbara Gibb with 20 members. Distance/approx. time: 6.8km in 2 hrs for 13 members and 7.4km in 2h10 for 9 members who opted to do a slightly longer and faster version for the final leg of the hike.

Brief description of trail (terrain/degree of difficulty): It is an easy to moderate trail, with varied terrain - through mixed forests and grasses. It was perfect hiking weather with the sun shining and the temperature hovering around – 6C.  Most hikers wore snowshoes however the trail was packed enough that a number of members hiked in boots with crampons. It was with the kind permission of landowners that we enjoyed hiking through forests of pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, maple, birch and beech.

Points of Interest/landmarks. Again, this year we were treated to 2 living Christmas trees decked out in festive finery!  A  Ramblers specific ornament was added to one of trees as a thank you to the landowners, (see photos). We passed by a sugar shack and a more than a century old railway bridge  See attached photos for these and the literal starting off on the right foot hiking pose.

Seasonal availability: 4 season although it would be wet in spring

Access Point (noting facilities if available): Access from Leger, no facilities
