On October 17th, join us in the discovery of the Tonnerre trail.  This trail is mainly located in the Mastigouche reserve. The reserve is near +QC+J0K/@46.4093252,-73.3555621,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cc61a68badd6b59:0x27b7c7ab189a85cd?hl=fr" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Mandeville,+QC+J0K/@46.4093252,-73.3555621,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cc61a68badd6b59:0x27b7c7ab189a85cd?hl=fr">Mandeville QC. It is about a two hour drive from Vaudreuil.

This is the hike profile:

This trail is part of the "Sentier National du Québec".  It is well marked with red and white signage. It has two main difficulties: a 200 m climb at km 6 and its length of 18 km. According to Balise QC, this hike is considered intermediate. It is a linear trail, so we must leave  cars at each end of the hike. The hike will start at the Catherine entrance and will end at the Saint-Bernard camping site. To park at the camping location, we have to pay $10 per vehicle.

There are two options for participating in this adventure:

  • Option 1 - You can do the road trip and the hike on the same day. Note that the driver of your car will have to drive 3 hours before the hike and 2 hours afterwards. If you are a passenger, this is not a problem; however, if you are the driver, it will be a long and tiring day.
  • Option 2 - You can make a weekend of it; staying the weekend in Mandeville (see lodging information/link below). On Saturday, you hike the Tonnerre trail, then enjoy a pleasant  meal  at the Resto La Mastigouche. On Sunday morning, you may do a second hike, this time in the Beausoleil Domaine.

I have rented the "Le Sapinière" cottage for the weekend. The cost is $381 including taxes. If we are 6 occupants, it works out to $31.75 per person per night. There are 3 other cottages available. To see photos and details concerning all 4 cottages, use this link:

REPORT:

2015-10-17 Tonnerre Trail

This is one of the best hikes I have done. The trail was well marked, the surface of the trail was very easy to walk on and there were no steep hills. But you still need good knees…

The magnificent scenery is between km 9 and km 13. So, if you don’t walk the full 18 km, you must start the hike at km 18. If you want to start the hike at 9:00, you must leave Vaudreuil at 6:30. If you would like to sleep near the trail, I suggest that you rent a cottage at Chalets Beausoleil. We enjoyed our stay there, especially the wood stove. After the hike, you can stop at resto La Mastigouche in Mandeville. The food and service there is excellent.
