BAS SAINT-LAURENT (LOWER ST LAWRENCE)

LONG WEEKEND - from September 4 to 7, 2015

Organizers: Carole, Anne, Edith

Difficulty: Intermediate

Dates: 3 days (from September 4 to 7, 2015)

This year, the Ramblers Association invite you to visit the magnificent Lower Saint Lawrence area, specifically, Le Bic, Rimouski and Ste-Luce over the Labour Day long weekend. This area is named World Culture and Nature Reserve  because of the region’s beautiful countryside and shoreline of the St. Lawrence as it opens to the sea.

The inn which will serve as our base is located approximately 600 km from home,  about a 6 ½ drive.

Lodging

We have reserved all the rooms at l’Auberge de L’Eider in Sainte-Luce, a charming beach village. This beachfront inn offers 20 rooms of which, 6 have 2 beds.

We will stay 3 nights, from Friday to Sunday night and depart on the Monday morning. Prices vary from $98 to $140 per night for 2 people and include breakfast.

All interested people must reserve their room individually by calling the inn keeper Mme Johanne Cloutier before January 10, 2015 at 1-450-449-6481. Have your credit card on hand.

We will free up the rooms after that date.

Please note: The inn is closed in winter, so  leave a message and the innkeeper will call you back; this may take a couple of days.

Those who would like to share a room will have to make arrangements on their own or contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The inn keeper will not be responsible for making arrangements for room sharing.

After you have reserved your room, please enter your name on the LIST. By doing so, your registration will help us to compare the list with the inn keeper and will also assist  later for carpooling arrangements. We will decide on the carpooling meeting point  in August.

Labour Day weekend is a very busy tourist time in this area since most of the hotels close for winter. It is likely to be very complicated to make a late reservation for this weekend.

Meals

The inn does not serve meals other than breakfast. For Saturday and Sunday dinners, we will go out to  the local restaurants in  Ste-Luce, ( Nipigon and Anse-aux-coques probably) ; details will be given in the spring. The Friday night dinner is on your own,  you may choose to eat where you wish.

Each hiker will be responsible for bringing food for his/her lunches on the hikes. Water is mandatory on the trails.

Hikes

The final hike schedule will be confirmed in the spring.

The park's atmosphere is unique. This area is well known for its shores, capes, bays, coves, mountains and islands and the hikes will showcase those.  We will also see breathtaking sunsets, seabirds which  nest in the park and rare plants blooming on its rocky shores.  It is beautiful, peaceful and relaxing...

Our main focus will be on hiking within Le  Bic National Park, the main trail: sentier des Murailles is 7.5 km and  from the  Champlain Peak (346 m ),  the view of the estuary and the islands in the park is superb.  We will continue the exploration of the park along the Michaud Peninsula with its  number of  trails dotted with coves and beaches. For the more adventurous, there is, accessible in  low tide, an area of rock formations which  offers a good challenge. This second portion of the hike will be between 7-10 km.

For the second day, we are planning to explore St. Barnabas Island outside of Rimouski. We will take an inflatable boat to get access to fairly easy trails around the island for a distance of approx. 12 km.
