REPORT

On a gorgeous Sunday morning 19 members of les RARA tried a new route.
Meeting in the parking on Chemin St. Emmanuel, beside the old Soulanges
Canal in Coteau du Lac, we walked along Chemin du Fleuve, enjoying the views
over a sparkling St Lawrence river.

We paused to look at the historic "Petit
Pouvoir" building which used to house the generating plant providing
electricity for the operation of the Canal installations.

We rested under a shady tree on Rue Beaudry while Martin gave a short
history of the canals in the Beauharnois / Soulanges region, vital to
maritime traffic between Europe and the heart of the North American
continent.

The group returned by the cycle/walking path along the canal bank.
Walking in narrow file and keeping to the left of the road along  Chemin du
Fleuve we met very little traffic. However, the canal path is a busy cycle
route.
Again, we kept to the left, leaving an open lane to our right for
cyclists.
Once again the debate arose about whether we should walk on the
left or the right.

As leader, I deemed it best to face the oncoming bike
traffic which reminded our walkers to keep well to the side when cyclists
approached. This seemed better than having them approach from behind in the
lane in which we were walking.
