Cap-St-Jacques Nature Park

Leaders : Barb and Alan Gibb

Level : EasyBeginner  Levels of difficulty for hikes

Distance: could be approx. 10 km. – depending on trail conditions

On Sunday May 24, join Alan and Barb on a hike on the trails in Cap St. Jacques. The trail wanders through field and forest, skirting Riviere des Prairies and Lac des Deux Montagnes. The 10km should take around 2 hours but may vary due to construction &/or trail conditions in the park. There may be some muddy areas so wear appropriate footwear.

Carpool

Because of the cost of parking fees: $6 for 2 hrs, $9 for the day - pay by credit card. per vehicule, if you are planning to carpool, meet at the Designer Outlets on 342 for an 8:25 departure. Otherwise, meet at the main park entrance for 9am. (20099, boul. Gouin Ouest)

If it is a nice day, you may want to bring a picnic lunch and if you are ambitious, hike another loop or two. There are washroom facilities at the beginning and part way along the trail. Indoor facilities open at 10 am on Sundays.

Bring your binoculars - there are numerous birds (you can use what you learned from the naturalist!) and hopefully turtles. We are calling this the "Nature Observancy" hike and invite you to watch along the route for the following:

  • a lone white birch
  • old stone Seignerie walls
  • a trailer park
  • a goat
  • a beach
  • a stairway to Heaven
  • evidence of a fireplace in the middle of a stone foundation
  • a turtle (pictures don't count)
  • evidence of an ant colony
  • a raccoon's penthouse apt.
  • a piliated woodpecker's fast food court
  • evidence of a microburst (or the ice storm)

You can contact Barb @ 438-350-1053

REPORT:

2015-24-05 Nature Observancy Hike_Report

Date of hike: Sunday, May 24, 2015

Name of Trail: combination of the Red Rabbit and Blue Squirrel in Cap St. Jacques Park, Pierrefonds

Leader(s) for the hike and # of hikers: Leaders - Alan and Barbara Gibb with 17 members Distance/approx. time: approx. 9 km in 2 hrs.

Brief description of trail (terrain/degree of difficulty): It is an easy trail that skirts the water’s edge for a large part, meanders through the forest and leads to the Eco farm, the Turtle Harbour lookout and the beach. In spite of a sprinkle of rain, it was perfect hiking weather. The only downside was the attack by hungry mosquitos for a short time in the woods.

Points of Interest/landmarks. Participants were challenged to use their powers of observation to spot a lone birch in a grove of maple trees, a trailer park, old stone seignerie walls, a goat, a beach, a raccoon’s penthouse apartment and a pileated woodpecker’s fast food court. Some were daredevil enough to climb the Stairway to Heaven. Paul spotted the golden turtle; however, we were treated to 4 live turtles sunning themselves on a log in the bay. Although no one could correctly answer the skill testing question, even with charade clues, the “golden turtle” caramel chocolate prize was enjoyed by participants who vowed to study harder next timeJ

Seasonal availability: 4 season although it can be wet in spring

Access Point (noting facilities if available): Access from main parking and chalet infocentre with both indoor (after 10am) and outdoor facilities.
