On December 21, please join us for a wintry 7.0 Km morning walk at the beautiful Cap-St-Jacques Nature Park

20099, boul. Gouin O., Montréal
Québec, Canada, H9K 1C6

Situated in a picturesque natural setting on the shore of the Deux Montagnes Lake, in the heart of the Cap-Saint-Jacques Nature Park, the outdoor centre is a jewel of the Montréal landscape. This recreational and educational centre–in perfect harmony with the environment– is your gateway to an exotic world of natural splendour.

We will meet at 9:00am at the Centre d'accueil which is in front of the bus stop area. We will start our walk at 9:10am.

$ Parking is $6 for 2 hours and $9 for the day.

Please note that if we have adverse walking conditions we may snowshoe a shorter distance so bring your poles and snowshoes. They are available for rental on site as well. Please layer accordingly for the temperature.
Edith and I will walk the course on Saturday Dec 20 to verify the conditions.

Our plan will be to take the purple pedestrian walk (see map below) through the fields and forest. We will pass the Cabane a sucre as well as the Chalet Gohier which overlooks Lac des Deux-Montagnes. We will then head towards the Ecological Farm where those who wish to, may see the animals.

There are washrooms here as well as the chance to have a nice warm drink and a bite should we wish. We will then continue along the shores of Rivière de Prairies and head back to the Centre d'Accueil.

The walk should be about 2.5 hours.

REPORT:

Cap St. Jacques walk - December 21, 2014 - Report

On December 21, 2014 the Ramblers group met for a pre Holiday walk at the Cap St. Jacques Natural Park in Pierrefonds. The temperature was -7 and slightly overcast. There were a total of 19 hikers. We started our walk at 9:10am.

The trails were pleasant to walk on and predominantly hard packed snow. We walked a total of 7.36 km with a duration time of 2 hours. This included a brief stop at the ecological farm, where some of us visited the barn and animals. We then continued the hike to the beautiful historical stone building Chateau Gohier, circa 1916 -  named after Édouard Gohier. He was a Mayor of Saint-Laurent who purchased numerous plots of land in the area for his family members. His dreams of finishing the castle like structure and living there were never realized due to financial hardship. Other owners of the building included Les religieuses des Saints-Noms-de-Jésus-et-de-Marie, Hotel Mont-Royal and currently Ville de Montreal.  We had a snack and hot chocolate - enjoyed the fireplaces, couches and company, and then continued our walk meandering past snow laden trees, the sugar shack and many cross country skiers. We arrived back at the Centre D'Accueil at 11:00 am.

It was a very enjoyable walk by everyone's comments and there were no incidents to report.

Thanks to Edith for helping me with this walk.
