Hike and social event in Oka

On Sunday, October 12, join the Ramblers on a hike and social event in Oka.

Leader: Terry Browitt

Level:  Intermediate for a short ascent  Levels of difficulty for hikes

Distance: 9 km

Ascent: +/- 100 m

Meeting Place: parking area at the corner of Selkirk and Main Road in Hudson. See: http://g.co/maps/6fcxe. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. for departure at 9:10 a.m.

From there, we will take no more than 10 cars and drive to the Hudson-Oka ferry terminal where we will leave the cars. We will board the ferry as pedestrians.

We will then board the ferry for the passage to Oka.

The pedestrian fare is $2.00 per person each way. The fare will be paid by the club for all paid-up members.

Once in Oka, we will follow the lake shore through a pleasant residential water front area that leads into farm fields. We eventually turn north and enter Oka Regional Park.

There is an entrance fee of $5:75 per person for parties of 15 people or more to enter this SEPAQ park. For this event and this event only at this time The Ramblers Association will pay this entrance fee for its paid-up members.

There is then a walk through the woods and a final uphill stretch to the Sanctuary at the summit where you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Ottawa Valley and Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

To allow adequate time for everyone to appreciate this vista, we will stay for approximately 30 minutes and it has been suggested that this presents a great opportunity for more socializing over some beverages and a piece of cheese. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own cheese or whatever they wish to eat and drink (wine).

After our meal, we will return via the same route. Depending on the timing with the ferry, we anticipate to be back in Hudson by 12:30.

Insect repellent may be required and parts of the trail can be muddy, so please  be prepared.

There will be facilities available at both ferry terminals.

I will be leading this hike and my cell phone number for enquiries and emergencies is 514-909-3505

Looking forward to seeing you on the trails

Terry Browitt

REPORT:

 Hike report October 12 2014

On a glorious and colourful autumn day, 27 members of Les Randonneurs
boarded the ferry to Oka. The leader was Martin Hofton (standing in for
Terry Browitt) and Paul Michetti acted as tail ender.

We met many other walkers on the climb up to the sanctuary and the look out
point was quite crowded since the Oka apple producers had a table of
samples. Nevertheless, we found some rocks to sit on and enjoyed a half hour
picnic break with a stunning view across Lake of Two Mountains to the
distant Adirondacks.

Everyone agreed the walk was a great success.

There were no incidents.
