Distance: 11.5 km

Level: Easy (with some steep banks to climb)

On Sunday August 3, we will hike a circular route between Côte St Charles and Chemin du Fief.

Much of this hike will be on private property with the kind permission of the landowners. It will give you a chance to enjoy parts of our beautiful landscape which you would not normally have the opportunity to see.

The hike will be 11.5 kms. There are some muddy sections, especially if it has been raining and three short but steep banks to climb and a stream to cross. Otherwise the route is flat. Wear good boots and bring water and mosquito repellent. Long sleeves and long pants are recommended since the mosquitoes can be ferocious in the woods and part of the walk is through long grass.

We will meet at 9 am for a 9:10 start, from the parking lot of Parc Saddlebrook on Woodbine in St Lazare. Take exit 22 from Autoroute 40 and go south towards St Lazare. After the Ultramar and Tim Hortons turn left at the first stop sign onto Bugle Call, then second left onto Woodbine. After 200m turn left into the parking for Parc Saddlebrook.

On the above map, ignore the parking on St-Charles at the red letter “A” and continue as directed to the Woodbine parking.

REPORT:

It was a fine day, becoming warm and somewhat humid by the end of the walk. 15 people participated. It was the fourth or fifth year we have walked this particular route. Although essentially on flat land, there is one steep bank to climb near the end of the walk. This year, one participant had a problem at this point, either from apprehension of the climb or from shortage of breath. It was not a point accessible by car, being almost midway between Alstonvale Road and Côte St Charles. Fortunately there was a somewhat shallower route to the top which, after catching her breath, the lady completed without difficulty.

Because this walk is somewhat longer than usual, and because the last two kilometers are through grassy fields which tend to be liberate humidity on a hot day, in future years the walk will be described as “Intermediate”.

The Saturday walks organized by Claude and Michèle are usually graded and it is recommended that all the Sunday walks also be graded on the same basis depending on length of walk, cumulative altitude change and underfoot conditions.
