On Sunday, May 25, join the Ramblers on a hike and social event in Oka

9:00 am for departure at 9:10 am

Leader: Terry Browitt

Level: Easy

Distance: about 8-9 km

Meeting Place: parking area at the corner of Selkirk and Main Road in Hudson. See: http://g.co/maps/6fcxe

From there, we will take no more than 10 cars and drive to the Hudson-Oka ferry terminal where we will leave the cars. We will board the ferry as pedestrians for the passage to Oka

The pedestrian fare is $2.00 per person each way, this fare will be paid this time by the club for all paid up club members

Once in Oka, we will follow the lake shore through a pleasant residential water front area that leads into farm fields. We eventually turn north and enter OkaRegionalPark. There is then a walk through the woods and a final uphill stretch to the Sanctuary at the summit where you are rewarded with spectacular views of the OttawaValley and Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

$ There is an entrance fee of $5:75 per person for parties of 15 people or more to enter this SEPAQ park. For this event and this event only at this time The Ramblers Association will pay this entrance fee for its paid-up members.

To allow adequate time for everyone to appreciate this vista, we will stay for approximately 30 minutes and it has been suggested that this presents a great opportunity for more socializing over some beverages and a piece of cheese. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own cheese or whatever they wish to eat and drink (wine)

.

After our meal, we will return via the same route. Depending on the timing with the ferry, we anticipate to be back in Hudson by 12:30.

Insect repellent may be required and parts of the trail can be muddy, so please  be prepared.

There will be facilities available at both ferry terminals.

I will be leading this hike and my cell phone number for emergencies is 514-909-3505 For information prior to the event I can be reached at 450-458-7131

We will then board the ferry for the passage to Oka.

Leader's Report

Sunday morning hike May 25, 2014

Ferry to Oka and hike to the Calvary summit and wine and cheese meal.

The weather was perfect, sunny and the temperature in the high teens centigrade. Many participants met at the SAQ parking on Main Road  and car pooled to the ferry terminus, while others drove straight to the terminus where there is now adequate parking. If needed there is supplementary parking on Sanderson, opposite the ferry entrance.

27 people participated including several new members.

The trail was in good condition except when we turned north into the fields where it was waterlogged and impassable. We retraced out steps and found a very good track about 200 meters back. As the previously used path is always wet and muddy this new discovery should become the official route

As anticipated the mosquitoes were very bad.

The walk went well and everyone enjoyed wine and cheese during an extended stop at the summit.

There were no incidents

This was the first event that the Ramblers Association agree to pick up all the cost including ferry fare and park entry fees.

The ferry fares were 2 x 27 x $2:00   $108:00 Cheque made out to me

Park entry 27 x $6:50 .   $175.50 Cheque made out to SEPQ

For a grand total of $283:50

One guest contributed $10:00 to these event costs

This financial support was well received and 2 amounts of $350:00 should be in next years budget to cover a similar event in the spring and fall.

Recommendation.

It is very difficult at the end of the hike for the leaders to count the people to ensure all are present before boarding the ferry. In future announcement members should be asked to assemble in the small park near to tourist bureau before proceeding to board the ferry.

I would like to thank Martin Hofton and Paul Michetti for their help and assistance during this walk.
