This day hike will be held Saturday March 8th

Leader: Claude Fortier

Length: 8 km

Level: Intermediate

Ascent: 150 m

The trail of the Route des Zingues, which is part of the Trans Canada Trail network, winds between  lakes Gagnon and Preston in the municipality of Duhamel where you can discover different landscapes.  The path starts near the beach south of Lac Gagnon. You will go up a side path to the hilltop observation deck overlooking Lac Gagnon where the view of the Laurentian hills is magnificent.

You will probably hear a woodpecker pounding its beak into a tree trunk or see a deer staring back at you.

Itinerary to la route des Zingues:

- Google map from the shopping center:http://g.co/maps/dzx84

- Alternatively take route 148 ouest/west to Papineauville, then route 321 to Duhamel. At the stop sign turn right onto rue Principale. Further along it becomes Chemin du Lac Gagnon ouest/west. After about 2 km, turn right onto Chemin du Lac Gagnon Est/east. Continue for about 3 km, you should see the parking lot at the head of sentier Julie.

We will meet at "the head of sentier Julie".

This is a 140 km ride which will take about 2h20.

At 10:30 a.m. we will decide where we leave the cars. Then the hike will begin on sentier Julie.

We will adapt the hike to the conditions that we encounter. Remember to bring trekking poles, your lunch and water. Waterproof hiking boots are strongly advised. Depending on conditions, we may wear crampons or snowshoes.

We plan to exit the trail by 4:00 p.m.

After the hike it would be fun to go to a restaurant or a pub to have a quick bite and rehash the day.

REPORT :

We were 10 participants, 5 were intermediate + and 5 were intermediate -.

Everyone enjoyed the hike, but for different reasons. The level of this hike is correctly labeled as INTERMEDIATE. The total walking distance is 9 km. The last ones to complete the trek made it in 5 hours.

The conditions were perfect, bright sunshine and blue sky. The trail was in good condition except for the very last segment which seems to be less used. The scenery is outstanding.

A few notes about the itinerary:

From Hawkesbury take the 344 N to the 50 W; 50 W to 323 N; 323 N to Namur; turn left onto 315 S; 315 S to Chéneville; turn right onto 321 N; 321 N to Duhamel; turn right onto Rue Principale; at the “dépanneur” you can set your odometer to zero; it is also your last chance to visit the men’s room and to fill up your car; from there rue Principale becomes Chemin du lac Gagnon West; after driving for 3,1 km turn right onto Chemin du lac Gagnon Est; about 500 meters from there, you will cross a wooden bridge immediately followed by a “Y”; take the left branch; continue to 6,8 km from the “dépanneur” and you will find the trail head parking; the parking at the end of la Route des Zingues is 6,4 km further.
