Return to School Hike

Leaders: Barb and Alan

Distance: 5.5 km or 11 km

Level: Easy

Join Alan and Barb  for a hike from Mount Pleasant School  in Hudson to Evergreen School in St. Lazare. It will be like an extra long recess.  Round trip is approximately 11 km. If you think you can only do 5.5 km,  there is an option to end the hike at Evergreen School, however, you must notify the Ramblers’ website This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Wed. Aug. 28 so arrangements can be made for shuttling vehicles.

If you want to have a little extra fun, bring a pen or sharp pencil and piece of paper (and in your knapsack you may want to bring a mini clipboard or book so you have a hard surface to  write on - and your snack.)  Be prepared to  use your brain and powers of observation. Brush up on your ABC’s.

Meet at Mount Pleasant School at 9:00 am for a 9:10 departure. Late comers may get a detention! For those who will be doing ½ the hike – meet at Evergreen School for 8:40 am. to allow time for  shuttling vehicles and getting to Mount Pleasant School for 9:00 am.

Bring insect repellent, sunscreen and water. You may want to wear long pants as part of the trail is through prickly raspberry bushes.

REPORT:

Return to School Hike

Date of hike: Sunday, September 1, 2013

Name of Trail (if applicable): sections of the Taylor Bradbury, Davidson and Fr. Demers trails

Leader(s) for the hike and # of hikers: Leaders - Alan and Barbara Gibb with 14”student” members and guests

Distance/approx. time: approx.11 km  in 3 hr

Brief description of trail (terrain/degree of difficulty): We set off from Mt. Pleasant School in Hudson on  easy to moderate trails, with varied terrain - through mixed forests and grasses. We crossed over bridges and boardwalks and through the underpass en route to Evergreen School in St. Lazare. There were short spans on the roadway to gain access to the next section of the trail. It was slower with more numerous than usual stops along the way because of the varied fitness level of some hikers.  We had a “recess and snack break” upon arrival at Evergreen School and there prizes were awarded to the teams which had completed the ABC challenge.

Three hikers terminated their hike at Evergreen School.  We unintentionally got separated into a faster and slower group on the return trip. Due to trail conditions, we did not take the path around the pond/lake for the return trip.

Points of Interest/ landmarks:   Because we hiked from school to school to school, hiker “students” who chose to participate, were challenged to spot and record something along the route that corresponded to each letter of the alphabet. At Evergreen School, we shared our alphabet answers and boxes of Smarties were awarded to the “Smarty Pants” in the group (one for the équipe francais and one for the English duo) who had completed their list of creative responses.
