REPORT:

For the May 17 - 20 long weekend, 14 members of the Ramblers Association had accepted the Parc-Orford Hotel's invitation for a complete hiking week end in the Eastern Townships. We arrived on Friday afternoon and after dinner, we took part in a night safari in the woods where all of our senses were challenged. We were accompanied by 3 SÉPAQ guides who initiated us to the sounds and odors of Mount Orford Park. We learned how to move in the forest in the total darkness with a sound screen of the song of spring peepers. We are proud of now being able to recognize the odor of raccoon glands! A raspberry tea was served to us before the return to the hotel.

On Saturday morning, we left for the day to climb Mount-Chauve. We climbed the West side trail to reach the barren summit, close to 600 metres in altitude with an ascent of 300 m. On reaching  the summit, an amazing view of Lake Stukely and Mount Orford awaits you. We had lunch on the flat rock on top of Mount-Chauve and then descended via  the East side trail. The group hiked the 9.6 km distance  in 3h30 (including a break for lunch at the top). The sight of Lake Stukely and Mount-Orford is splendid, and in spring, nature is particularly beautiful with the edges of trails lined with white or dark red trilliums and other wild plants.

The day concluded with an entertaining show ''Long Live Musical Comedy '' performed by the talented trio made up of Marie-Pierre Labonté, Martin Gregoire and Marco Labranche, our friendly organizer.

Sunday morning, the group set out again in direction of the of  Mount-Orford. Although the assent is only 435 m,  the '' La 4 km '' is difficult because it is a gravel path that goes straight up without any flat sections; bit once at the top, the panoramic view of the surrounding peaks takes your breath away as much as the climb. The view takes in the entire region: Mont-Chauve to the north, Mont Chapman and Lake Magog to the East, the village of Magog and Mont Sutton to the South as well as Lake Orford to the west.  We descended via a downhill ski trail  '' La Grande Coulée ''.  The 6.3 km hike was completed in 2 hours including a photo stop at the top.

The level of both hikes is intermediate.  We enjoyed a nice lunch, then at 2pm boarded the bus to return to the hotel.

We had  beautiful weather with sunshine and clear skies all weekend. We all enjoyed our stay and met with some other hiking clubs such as the Joliette club de marche Zahra and the Mille Pattes club of  Fabreville.

All the participants thoroughly enjoyed their stay and we thank the Hotel Park-Orford for having organized this weekend in collaboration with the Federation de la marche du Quebec. Our cordial thanks go to all the professional staff of the Parc-Orford Hotel and especially to Patrick Turgeon, the coordinator, and to Marco Labranche who accompanied us on each excursion and offered us, along with the two other singers, a most pleasant musical evening.
