The Morgan Arboretum is a 245 hectare forested reserve, situated on the McGill University Macdonald Campus in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. Since 1945, when McGill University acquired the property, the Morgan Arboretum has been the site of teaching, research, and public education related to the management of woodland resources as well as being an important recreational facility for visitors. All year long, it’s a bird sanctuary.

In the winter, the Arboretum attracts winter finches, tits, crossbills, the occasional northern woodpecker, the Red-headed pileated Woodpecker,  nuthatches and raptors such as the Northern Goshawk.  At least four species of owls, Great Horned, Northern Saw-whet, Barred and Eastern Screech-Owl have bred here and Great Gray and Boreal Owls have been found here in winter.

REPORT:

 Morgan Arboretum Snowshoe Hike. February 17, 2013

The snowshoe hike to the Morgan  Arboretum  on Sunday, February 17 went very smoothly, without  incident save for the delay in the hike departure time.  Because Arboretum employees only start at 9:am and there were a number of hikers who had to pay the entrance fee, we delayed our hike start until 9:25 a.m.

People were given the option  of hiking  4.4. km or  the longer trail for a distance of 8 km on a combination of snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails as well as off trail.

The turnout was 33 people of which 13  opted for the shorter hike of 4.4. km while 20 people decided to continue on for the  8 km hike which was completed in 2 h 30 which included  a few stops. I was the leader, Michèle Côté acted as a guide and  Claude Fortier acted as the sweeper.

Members gave lots of positive feedback such as: the beauty of the trails and park, the general atmosphere, the smooth running of the hike and the feeling of accomplishment for many who had never hiked 8 km on snowshoes before!

Note: The web page should be corrected to include the following information:
-  entrance fee is now : 6$ instead of 5$;
-  the length of the shorter hike is: 4.4 km instead of 3.3 km
-  the longer hike  is 8 km instead of 7.5 km.
